Re: Tumblr Trouble

azspot:

…for most of our shared existence together, Tumblr has been a model of stability with outages and glitches (other than rich text editor follies) rare occurrences. Meanwhile, that other popular “microblogging” (/yes, I realize they are not equivalent products) service, Twitter, has endured a most checkered history of availability and bug-less-ness. Now, however, the behavior and performance of these two popular platforms has flip-flopped.

You’re absolutely right.

In short: While we’ve kept up with our scale to date, the recent escalation in traffic — we’re up more than 600 million impressions in two months — has caused a few systems to crack simultaneously. Our little team has been working like mad to keep these features stable and snappy.

On the features you mentioned:

  • We’ve made huge progress with the speed of the Dashboard and are squashing the last remaining bottlenecks. The issues you were experiencing should already be much improved.
  • It breaks our hearts when the Queue wigs out. It’s one of our favorite and most unique features. Simply: It’s now pushing volume it wasn’t designed for, so next week we’re launching a completely overhauled back-end with a killer new interface to boot.

We weren’t as prepared as we needed to be. But we have a team and an aggressive roadmap that we’re extremely confident in. We slipped, but I promise we won’t let you down.

Your patience and positivity mean so much. Thank you.

And if you’re interested in helping scale Tumblr from Top 50 to the Top 10, we’d love to talk!

Vespa Is Awesome

  • We secured a spot at the garage around the corner. We can keep the key and pick it up whenever! Awesome.
  • I hadn’t realized how many motorcycles and scooters park on 29th and 30th street (near our office).  Parking there was breezy.
  • Dropping off Rachel at NYU or her lab and parking at Tumblr seems to take about 35-40 minutes all-in. Not too bad.
  • Rachel is a much better driver than I am passenger.
  • I think the cab drivers want to kill me.
